Regulations and Standards Department (formerly Technical Department)

The Regulations and Standards Department is responsible for technical evaluation, interpretation, and implementation of IMO conventions and other instruments; oversight of Recognized Organizations; and interpretation and implementation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) regulations and the International Labour Organization (ILO) regulations.

The Regulations and Standards Department is also responsible for:

  • Ensuring that all ships are in compliance with IMO Conventions;
  • Evaluating applications for exemptions,  equivalencies and alternate arrangements under IMO Conventions;
  • Issuing IMO/ ITU dispensations, ILO dispensations and exemptions, and ITU dispensations;
  • Issuing Load Line Alteration Books;
  • Administering the Extended Dry Dock (EDD) Program; and
  • Reviewing and approving SOPEP, SMPEP, BWM plans; VOC management plans; and STS operations plans.
